![]() ![]() What can GSR patterns indicate? The distance from the victim to the shooter. GSR (Gun Shot Residue) is trace evidence made of smoke and unused powder particles. One proposed way to measure stress involves using what is known as galvanic skin response (GSR), which is the electrical conductance of the skin and depends on pre- secretory activity in the sweat glands (Lader 1962). It is noteworthy that both positive (“happy” or “joyful”) and negative (“threatening” or “saddening”) stimuli can result in an increase in arousal – and in an increase in skin conductance. ![]() GSR measurements work by detecting changes in electrical (ionic) activity resulting from changes in sweat gland activity. The sweating on hands and feet is triggered by emotional stimulation: Whenever we are emotionally aroused, the GSR data shows distinctive patterns that are visible with bare eyes and that can be quantified statistically. Galvanic Skin Response originates from the autonomic activation of sweat glands in the skin.
